Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) System at Chandragadhi and Janakpur Airports
Supply, delivery, installation and testing of ADB Safegate airfield ground lighting systems to enable night operations and improve safety at two major domestic airports previously limited to daytime operations.
Project Overview
Implemented complete ADB Safegate airfield ground lighting systems at Chandragadhi Airport (4,928 aircraft movements and 281,000 passenger movements in 2019) and Janakpur Airport (2,846 aircraft movements and 136,678 passenger movements in 2019) to transform these day-only operations into 24/7 capable facilities. The comprehensive AGL installation includes a runway lighting system, a runway threshold lighting system, a runway end lighting system, a taxiway lighting system, and an airfield lighting control and monitoring system, all compliant with ICAO guidelines. Both airports are located in the Terai region and were previously completely closed during winter due to poor visibility conditions, creating significant passenger problems. The main challenges included working at busy airports with tight deadlines, requiring early morning to late night installation schedules, with work outside airside areas during operations and inside airfield only during no-flight periods. The project involved vibrant terrains, unpredictable weather patterns, and increasing air traffic, with particular difficulties in Jhapa and Dhanusha districts, which are becoming major business hubs. The successful installation has resulted in increased flight movements, reliable night operations, and enhanced passenger flow with the commencement of night flights.
