Project Details
Project Name: Procurement of Electronic Flight Strips at GBIA
Client: Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) – National Pride Project
Location: Gautam Buddha International Airport, Nepal
Start Date: 23rd February 2023
Completion Date: 30th April 2024
Project Duration: Approximately 14 months
Industry: Aviation
Project Description
The Electronic Flight Strip (EFS) System is an advanced software and hardware solution specifically designed for Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs). Its primary purpose is to digitize flight data recording and management, previously done through manual paper-based systems. By integrating this digital system into the Control Working Positions (CWPs) of ATCs at GBIA, the system enables real-time interaction with flight information, enhancing situational awareness and coordination within the control tower.
Core Features and Capabilities:
Graphical User Interface (GUI): An intuitive display that shows live flight movements, schedules, and ground operations.
Flight Data Integration: Enables seamless data sharing between different air traffic control units.
Clearance Logging: Maintains digital logs of clearances and instructions given to pilots.
Conflict Detection: Helps preemptively detect and resolve operational conflicts.
Runway & Taxiway Management: Facilitates planning and execution of efficient aircraft movements.
Project Execution and Collaboration
This large-scale implementation was carried out with direct technical assistance and oversight by ADB SAFEGATE Austria, a global leader in airport performance systems. The Mahavir Shree International team facilitated local deployment, infrastructure integration, and logistical management throughout the project duration.
Training and capacity-building sessions were also conducted for DCA and ATC staff of GBIA, focusing on:
System operations
Troubleshooting techniques
Maintenance procedures
Simulation-based real-time scenario handling
Key Benefits and Impact
The successful implementation of the EFS System at GBIA has delivered measurable improvements in operational reliability and safety. Specific impacts include:
Enhanced Efficiency: Digital strips allow faster updates and reduce workload for ATCs.
Operational Accuracy: Real-time updates and automation reduce manual errors.
Improved Coordination: Better integration between air and ground operations.
Conflict Mitigation: Early alerts and graphical visibility help ATCs resolve conflicts before they escalate.
Sustainability: A shift to digital means reduces paper usage and contributes to a greener airport environment.
This implementation aligns with Nepal's vision for modern aviation infrastructure and is a benchmark project for future airport digitization efforts.
